A look passes between you, a laugh is shared, a tender moment unfolds. It’s the way he glances at you when you aren’t looking, the way his hand rests on your back, the look on your faces when you hold your brand new baby. These are the moments I endeavor to document as a lifestyle photographer.
I love beautifully styled shoots and gorgeous poses, but lifestyle photography is also about capturing fleeting moments, raw emotions, and personalities that are uniquely yours. I love details, bringing out who you are, and finding the beauty in both the every day and the once in a lifetime moments.
I am a natural light photographer, so I will use the light readily available at our location. This means we will take the lighting into consideration when planning and scheduling your session, whether it is held outside during the golden hour or inside your home as the morning light filters in through the windows.
For Wedding Stories, when possible, I go to your venue ahead of the wedding day to assess the lighting. As much as possible, I use the natural light available, but I will use flash when necessary. Receptions nearly always include flash photography, but I still work to ensure the flash isn’t harsh and your images capture the ambiance of the room.
Wedding Story Sessions
My goal is to be in the background and document your wedding day as it unfolds. Throughout the day as you and your groom are getting ready, I will be an un-intrusive presence, floating in and out to capture the hair & makeup, the details, and getting dressed. During our pre-wedding consultation, we will work together to discuss the portraits you want, as well, and decide on the best timing within your wedding day schedule.
It is my goal to ensure that your wedding portraits are both modern and timeless, so I will pose you and give you direction, but I will also capture a lot of photographs of you two interacting naturally, as well. When you imagine your final wedding images, you can expect to see your story from start to finish, with numerous details, candid interactions, and the big moments included. It is your once-in-a-lifetime day and I want to make sure you have all the memories of it documented.
Prior to your lifestyle session, we will have a phone consultation, and during that time I will learn about you and your family, as well as your vision for your session. When it’s time for your portrait session, I will help you with posing and getting comfortable in front of the camera (because I realize
that not everyone loves being on that side of the lens), but I will also step back and allow you and your loved ones interact naturally in order to capture those moments. Especially with young children, these types of natural interactions lead to the best images.
I edit images in a mixture of black and white and color. Poignant moments and emotionally raw images typically find themselves in B&W, as well as any images in which there’s a background color that is visually distracting. You can expect a good mix of both in your final images.
I tend not to edit with a heavy hand and aside from the occasional photo on my blog, I do not use trendy overlays, styles, etc. so your images will remain more timeless. I also will not use Photoshop to drastically alter any images, as my goal is to document the beautiful moments of real life.
